Introducing: Min Jin Lee's Novel, "Pachinko"

Updated: Sep 18, 2022

What is it?

- Min Jin narrates an intergenerational family epic describing Korean displacement and transnational colonial experience.

What question are we trying to answer?

- How does the history of Japanese colonization affect a Japanese-Korean family down the generations?

What's the message?

- “Pure” resistance to imperialism and colonization is impossible, and the colonized people make their best efforts to preserve themselves AND their own identity in a changing world

- Ex: attempting to pass as Japanese, running the black market, relying on organized crime such as Yakuza (reflects the vulnerable position of Koreans
